Globular cluster in the constellation Lyra, discovered by Charles Messier on 1779.		  
 
Messier 56 (also known as M56 or NGC 6779) is located almost midway along an imaginary line between Albireo (β Cygni) and Sulafat (γ Lyrae).

M56 is at a distance of about 32,900 light-years from Earth and measures roughly 84 light-years across, with a combined mass some 230,000 times that of the Sun.

This cluster is following a retrograde orbit through the Milky Way. The properties of this cluster suggest that it may have been acquired during the merger of a dwarf galaxy, of which Omega Centauri forms the surviving nucleus.

In 2000, a diffuse X-ray emission was tentatively identified coming from the vicinity of the cluster. This is most likely interstellar medium that has been heated by the passage of the cluster through the galactic halo. The relative velocity of the cluster is about 177 km s−1, which is sufficient to heat the medium in its way.

Messier 56 (también conocido como M56 o NGC 6779) se encuentra casi a mitad de camino entre Albireo (β Cygni) y Sulafat (γ Lyrae).

M56 se encuentra a una distancia aproximada de 32.900 años luz de la Tierra y mide unos 84 años luz de ancho, conteniendo una masa de unas 230.000 veces la de nuestro Sol.

Este cluster sigue una órbita retrógrada a través de la Vía Láctea. Las propiedades del cluster sugieren que pudo ser adquirido durante la mezcla con una galaxia enana, de la cual Omega Centauri formaría su núcleo superviviente.

En 2000 se detectó una emisión difusa de rayos X que se identificó como procedente de la vecindad del cluster. Esto se debe seguramente a medio interestelar calentado al paso del cluster a través del halo galáctico. La velocidad relativa del cluster es de unos  177 km s, suficiente para calentar el medio a su paso.
