It is the brightest diffuse reflection nebula in a group that includes NGC 2064, NGC 2067, and NGC 2071, all part of the Orion B molecular cloud complex. Located approximately 1,350 light-years from Earth, M78 is visible in small telescopes as a hazy patch illuminated by two B-type stars, HD 38563 A and HD 38563 B, of 10th and 11th magnitude. It is a popular target for amateur astronomers, who have given it the common name Casper the Friendly Ghost Nebula.

Discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1780, M78 was included in Charles Messier's catalog of comet-like objects that same year.

The nebula's dust cloud reflects light from its two central stars, making it visible. Infrared observations reveal an embedded star cluster and a hierarchy of gas clumps with core masses ranging from 0.3 M☉ to 5 M☉. 

On May 23, 2024, the European Space Agency released a high-resolution image of M78 from the Euclid mission, revealing hundreds of thousands of previously unseen objects, including substellar bodies.

Es la nebulosa de reflexión difusa más brillante de un grupo que incluye NGC 2064, NGC 2067 y NGC 2071, todas parte del complejo de nubes moleculares Orión B. Ubicada aproximadamente a 1350 años luz de la Tierra, M78 es visible con telescopios pequeños como una zona nebulosa iluminada por dos estrellas de tipo B, HD 38563 A y HD 38563 B, de magnitud 10 y 11. Es un objetivo popular para los astrónomos aficionados, quienes la han llamado comúnmente Nebulosa Casper, el Fantasma Amistoso.

Descubierta por Pierre Méchain en 1780, M78 fue incluida en el catálogo de objetos similares a cometas de Charles Messier ese mismo año.

La nube de polvo de la nebulosa refleja la luz de sus dos estrellas centrales, lo que la hace visible. Las observaciones infrarrojas revelan un cúmulo estelar incrustado y una jerarquía de cúmulos de gas con masas centrales que oscilan entre 0,3 M☉ y 5 M☉.

El 23 de mayo de 2024, la Agencia Espacial Europea publicó una imagen de alta resolución de M78 de la misión Euclid, que reveló cientos de miles de objetos nunca antes vistos, incluyendo cuerpos subestelares.
