Hercules is a prominent crater located in the northeast part of the Moon, to the west of the crater Atlas. It lies along the east edge of a southward extension in the Mare Frigoris. To the west across the mare is Bürg. To the south is the ruined crater Williams.
The interior walls of Hercules have multiple terraces, and there is a small outer rampart. The crater floor has been flooded by lava in the past, and contains several areas of low albedo. The central peak has been buried, leaving only a low hill near the midpoint. The satellite crater Hercules G is located prominently just to the south of the center. The small crater Hercules E lies along the southern rim of Hercules.
Atlas is a prominent lunar impact crater that is located in the northeast part of the Moon, to the southeast of Mare Frigoris. Just to the west is the slightly smaller but still prominent crater Hercules. Northeast of Atlas is the large crater Endymion.
The inner wall of Atlas is multiply terraced and the edge slumped, forming a sharp-edged lip. This is a floor-fractured crater with a rough and hilly interior that has a lighter albedo than the surroundings. Floor-fractures are usually created as a result of volcanic modifications.
There are two dark patches along the inner edge of the walls; one along the north edge and another besides the southeast edges. A system of slender clefts named the Rimae Atlas crosses the crater floor, and were created by volcanism. Along the north and northeastern inner sides are a handful of dark-halo craters, most likely due to eruptions. Around the midpoint is a cluster of low central hills arranged in a circular formation.
 Hercules es un prominente cráter ubicado en la parte noreste de la Luna, al oeste del cráter Atlas. Se sitúa en el borde este de una extensión hacia el sur del Mare Frigoris. Al oeste, a través del mar lunar, aparece el cráter Bürg. Al sur se hallan los restos del cráter Williams, muy erosionado.
Las paredes interiores de Hercules presentan múltiples terrazas, con una pequeña rampa exterior. El suelo del cráter ha sido inundado por lava en el pasado, y contiene varias áreas de bajo albedo. El pico central ha sido enterrado por la lava, dejando solo una colina baja cerca del punto medio. El cráter satélite Hercules G se encuentra en una posición prominente justo al sur del centro. El pequeño cráter Hercules E a su vez se halla en el sector sur del brocal de Hercules.
En el pasado este cráter ha sido reportado como localización de un fenómeno transitorio.
Atlas es un destacado cráter de impacto de la luna, localizado en la zona noreste.
La pared interna del cráter Atlas ha aumentado su terraza al desplomarse el borde, formando un canto afilado. Se trata de un cráter de suelo fracturado, con un interior áspero y montañoso que tiene un albedo más ligero que el entorno. Las fracturas del suelo suelen crearse como consecuencia de alteraciones volcánicas.
Presenta dos manchas oscuras a lo largo del borde interior de las paredes, una junto al extremo norte y la otra en el borde sureste. Un sistema de fisuras delgadas generadas por vulcanismo, denominadas Rimae Atlas, cruzan el fondo del cráter. A lo largo de los lados interiores del norte y noreste se localiza un puñado de oscuros cráteres de halo, muy probablemente debido a las erupciones. Su zona centro está ocupada por un conjunto de bajas colinas dispuestas en una formación circular. |
