The Heart Nebula, IC 1805, lies some 7500 light years away from Earth and is located in the Perseus arm of the Galaxy in the constellation Cassiopeia. This is an emission nebula showing glowing gas and darker dust lanes. The nebula is formed by plasma of ionized hydrogen and free electrons.

The picture show the central part of this wide nebula (with aparent size of 5 times the diameter of full moon). Does not include the very brightest part of this nebula classified as NGC 896.

The nebula's intense red output and its configuration are driven by the radiation emanating from a small group of stars near the nebula's center. This open cluster of stars known as Melotte 15 contains a few bright stars nearly 50 times the mass of our Sun, and many more dim stars that are only a fraction of our Sun's mass. The cluster used to contain a microquasar that was expelled millions of years ago.

IC 1805 (the Heart nebula) is also sometimes called the 'Running Dog nebula' because it is said to resemble a running dog when viewed through a telescope.

La Nebulosa del Corazón, IC 1805, se encuentra a unos 7500 años luz de la Tierra y en el brazo de Perseo de la Vía Láctea, en la constelación de Casiopea. Se trata de una nebulosa de emisión que muestra gas brillante y bandas de polvo más oscuras. La nebulosa está formada por plasma de hidrógeno ionizado y electrones libres.

La imagen muestra la parte central de esta amplia nebulosa (con un tamaño aparente de 5 veces el diámetro de la luna llena). No incluye la parte más brillante de esta nebulosa, clasificada como NGC 896.

La intensa emisión roja de la nebulosa y su configuración son impulsadas por la radiación que emana de un pequeño grupo de estrellas cerca del centro de la nebulosa. Este cúmulo abierto de estrellas conocido como Melotte 15 contiene algunas estrellas brillantes de casi 50 veces la masa de nuestro Sol, y muchas más estrellas tenues que son solo una fracción de la masa de nuestro Sol. El cúmulo contenía un microcuásar que fue expulsado hace millones de años.

A IC 1805 (la Nebulosa del Corazón) también se la llama a veces “la Nebulosa del Perro Corredor” porque se dice que se parece a un perro corriendo cuando se la observa a través de un telescopio.
