Small and faint pair of interacting galaxies		  
 
NGC 474 (left in the image) has a very bright core, which dominates the view. An elliptical haze surrounds this core.  A large aperture instrument will reveal a slight glow that extends much farther from the galaxy--much of the way to its neighbor. 

NGC 470 appears as a bright oval of much higher surface brightness than its neighbor.  At first glance NGC 470 appears both larger and brighter than NGC 474, even though charts and photos show just the opposite.  This is yet another indication of how different the morphologies of these galaxies are.  The bright core and smooth appearance of NGC 474 hides the intricate, yet much fainter surrounding shells.  On the other hand, NGC 470 looks immediately like a galaxy.

NGC 474 is a shell galaxy.  The shells are the wide arcs that surround the main part of the galaxy (you can see them faintly in the image).  These shells have been modeled as the result of gravitational interaction with nearby NGC 470.  As NGC 470 passed near its gravity disrupted the thick disk.

NGC 474 (izquierda en la imagen) tiene un núcleo muy brillante, que domina la vista. Una neblina elíptica rodea este núcleo. Un instrumento de gran apertura revelará una luz tenue que se extiende mucho más allá de la galaxia - la mayor parte hacia su compañera.

NGC 470 se presenta como un óvalo brillante de brillo superficial muy superior a su vecino. A primera vista, NGC 470 parece tanto más grande y más brillante que NGC 474, a pesar de que las fotos muestran exactamente lo contrario. Esta es otra indicación de cómo son de diferentes las morfologías de estas galaxias. NGC 474 es una galaxia shell. Las capas son los amplios arcos que rodean la parte principal de la galaxia (se pueden ver débilmente en la imagen). Estas capas se han modelado como el resultado de la interacción gravitacional con la cercana NGC 470. Al pasar NGC 470 cerca, su gravedad afectó al disco de NGC474.
