M13 globular cluster and two spiral galaxies: NGC6207 and IC4617 		 
 
Discovered by Edmond Halley in 1714, and catalogued by Charles Messier on June 1, 1764.

With an apparent magnitude of 5.8, it is barely visible with the naked eye on a very clear night. Its real diameter is about 145 light-years, and is composed of several hundred thousand stars, the brightest of which is the variable star V11 with an apparent magnitude of 11.95. M13 is 25,100 light-years away from Earth. Its diameter is about 23 arc minutes and is readily viewable in small telescopes.

The Arecibo message of 1974 was transmitted toward this globular cluster. The reason was that with a higher star density the chances of a life harboring planet, with intelligent life forms, were higher.

Two spiral galaxies could be seen in the same field of this picture: NGC6207 located on the down-left quarter and the faint IC4617 located at mid distance from M13 (visible only in enlarged view).

Con una magnitud aparente de 5.8, es apenas visible a simple vista en cielos oscuros. Su diámetro real es de unos 14 años luz, y está compuesto por varios cientos de miles de estrellas, siendo la más brillante de ellas una variable con una magnuitud aparente de 11.95. M13 se encuentra a 25.000 años luz de la Tierra. Su diámetro es de unos 23 arcs y se aprecia en seguida con un telescopio pequeño.

El mensaje de Arecibo de 1974 se transmitió hacia este cluster globular. La razón fue que con una densidad de estrellas mayor, la posibilidad de que la señal alcanzase un planeta con formas de vida inteligente era mayor.

Se pueden ver dos galaxias espirales en el mismo campo: NGC6207 situada en el cuadrante inferior izquierdo y la débil IC4617 situada a mitad de camino de M13 (visible solo en la imagen ampliada).
